The Cape Eland (Taurotragus oryx), part of the spiral-horned antelope family, is renowned for its massive size, with males weighing up to 900 kg and standing up to 1.8 meters at the shoulder. They exhibit a fawn to tawny coat, with older males turning darker. Both sexes have distinctive, tightly spiraled horns, though the males’ horns tend to be thicker and slightly shorter than those of the females.

Cape Elands are predominantly grazers but also browse, feeding on a variety of grasses and leaves. They are known for their remarkable ability to survive in both arid and semi-arid regions, making them adaptable to various habitats.
